Colouring and Perching

Cambar chicks have strong auto-sexing colour characteristics - the boys having straw coloured heads and the girls are dark all over. Occaisionally the boys will show 'tiger' like colouring with a straw coloured body with strong dark stripes.

The breed as a whole is 'flighty' and this can be read literally! They behave more like young sparrows than hens and will flutter quite a distance to find a comfy perch with a good view. The picture left shows them ignoring their hand built deluxe broody box, prefering to perch on the edge and keep an eye on life in our conservatory.

Girls at 45 days

These are from a batch at 45 days showing the Hackles developing their gold colouring and the penciling (or lacing) on the body feathers.

Young Cockerels at 58 days

Three boys are shown here at 58 days - they weigh in about 600gm. Their adult colouring is just developing - you can see the gold feathers starting to show. The Barred Plymouth Rock influence is plain to see.
